Paving Cost Calculator Guide (Slabs, Area & Waste)

This guide explains how the Paving Cost Calculator works when you price by or by slab, how to convert slab sizes (cm/mm/in) into area, and how to account for waste, edging and extras. Use it for patios, paths and driveways.

How the Calculator Works

Area (m²) = Length × Width (after converting ft → m) Area incl. Waste = Area × (1 + Waste%) Square Slab Area (m²) = (Edge length in metres)² Slab Count = ceil( Area incl. Waste ÷ Slab Area ) Total Cost (per m²) = Area incl. Waste × Rate per m² Total Cost (per slab) = Slab Count × Price per slab

Tip: Keep waste between 5–10% for simple layouts. Go higher for curves, random packs, or tight cuts around manholes and drains.

Common Square Slab Sizes & Areas

Nominal SizeEdge (mm)Area (m²)Pieces per 10 m² (no waste)
450 × 4504500.2025≈ 49
600 × 6006000.36≈ 28
450 × 600 (rect)450×6000.27≈ 38
900 × 600900×6000.54≈ 19
Note: For rectangular slabs, area = (edgeA m × edgeB m). The calculator supports slab area directly (m²/ft²) or a single edge for square slabs (cm/mm/in).

Typical UK Costs (2025)

ItemTypical Range (ex. VAT)Notes
Porcelain / concrete pavers£20 – £55 per m²Budget concrete at lower end; branded porcelain higher.
Natural stone pavers£28 – £70 per m²Sandstone/limestone; premium calibrated/sawn at top end.
Jointing compound / mortar£2 – £6 per m²Depends on joint width/depth and product.
Bedding sand / mortar bed£5 – £12 per m²Single-size to full mortar bed depending on method.
Edging stones£10 – £25 per LMMaterial only; install adds labour.
Geotextile membrane£1.5 – £3 per m²Under sub-base; reduces fines migration.
Labour (laying slabs)£25 – £50 per m²Complex patterns/porcelain at higher end.
Waste removal£150 – £400 per skipOr £180 – £420 per 8-wheel grab load.

Regional note: London & South East can be +10–20%. North/Wales/Scotland often −5–10%.

Time & Labour Planning

Crew / ConditionsProductionNotes
2-person crew, simple rectangle12–20 m² / dayFull mortar bed, cuts minimal, stock close by.
3-person crew, complex layout15–25 m² / dayPatterned/porcelain with frequent cuts.
Edging install10–25 LM / dayTrench, concrete haunching, levels & line.
Important: Wet weather, long barrow runs, and tricky access can halve production. Add contingency for lifting, drainage falls and manhole covers.

Example Calculations

1) Per m² Pricing

Patio 6.0 × 4.0 m, waste 8%, rate £35/m².

Area = 6 × 4 = 24.00 m² Area incl. waste = 24 × 1.08 = 25.92 m² Total = 25.92 × £35 = £907.20 Per m² = £35 • Per slab depends on slab size

2) Per slab Pricing (600 × 600)

Same patio, waste 8%, price £8 per slab, square 600 mm.

Slab area = 0.6 × 0.6 = 0.36 m² Area incl. waste = 24 × 1.08 = 25.92 m² Slabs = ceil( 25.92 ÷ 0.36 ) = 72 Total = 72 × £8 = £576Per m² = £576 ÷ 25.92 ≈ £22.22

Checklist Before You Order

  • Confirm falls and finished floor level at thresholds.
  • Pick laying method (full bed mortar vs sand bed + jointing compound).
  • Include waste % suitable for layout and slab type.
  • Add allowances for edging, drainage channels, manhole covers.
  • Plan waste removal (skip or grab) and access routes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What waste percentage should I use?

Most square/rectangular patios work with 5–10%. Use 10–15% for curves, random patterns or porcelain with lots of cutting.

How do I price per slab if I only know the edge size?

Convert edge to metres and square it. Example: 600 mm = 0.6 m → 0.6 × 0.6 = 0.36 m² per slab.

Can I mix per-slab and per-m² prices?

Yes. The calculator outputs both totals and unit rates so you can compare suppliers quoting differently.

How many slabs do I need?

Slab count = ceil( area (incl. waste) ÷ slab area ). Round up to avoid shortages.

Does this include sub-base and labour?

This guide is for surface paving costs. Use the Sub-Base and Paving Bed calculators to complete your full estimate and add labour.
